For example, a 1-Power rod will be for lighter-duty fishing and carry light line and lure ratings, while a 5-Power rod will have much higher ratings and offer a ton more power for more demanding fishing applications. Rod Power refers to the amount of force needed to flex the rod blank. (Picture for Rod Power Section *just a simple fishing pic would do) Conventional bass anglers love Extra Fast rods for techniques like jig and worm fishing or drop-shotting in deep water. This allows for an extremely crisp rod with a stouter feeling that can generate strong hook-sets. Extra-Fast: Not quite as common as Fast Action rods, an Extra Fast blank shows most of its flex very close to the tip. It’s a versatile action that is well-suited to a variety of techniques/styles. Fast action rods do most of their flexing closer the tip of the rod which gives the angler more power and crispness throughout the blank. Fast: This is a very common rod action throughout both conventional and fly fishing. We use this action heavily in our crankbait bass rods. This action is also excellent for light line, small hooks, and treble hooks, but also gives the angler a touch more control due to slightly less flex. Medium-Fast/Moderate-Fast: These rods are similar to the Medium/Moderate rods described above, but they bend just a little less through the midsection.Rods like these can be great for fishing with light line, small hooks, or treble hooks because they offer a lot of “cushion” to prevent line from breaking or hooks from tearing out of a fish’s mouth. Medium/Moderate Action: A rod with this designation will produce most of its bend from the tip down into the midsection.Slow action rods are not very crisp and outside of some fly rods, are not super common, either. Slow Action: The rod bends deeply throughout the blank and into the handle section.A typical breakdown of rod actions (as seen in the chart above) goes like this: Rod Action refers to how a rod blank flexes under load. You’ll sometimes hear an angler say something like “I have a heavy action rod” or “I need a fast power rod”- this is technically incorrect. “Rod Action” and “Rod Power” are often confused. The reason behind this is simple: we think there is no finer, more consistent, more dependable components available on the market today! Powell proudly uses Fuji components on all of our rods. When you’ve been making fishing rods for over 100 years one thing is for certain: you didn't get there by chance! Through our immense expertise and rigorous R&D program, we are able to offer our customers extreme performance at great price points. This combination of design and technology increases the hoop strength, helps the fibers resist elongation/separation, and improves the dampening characteristics of the blank for a crisp, lively action that’s a pleasure to use. Our longitudinal fibers stay intact better because they are married together by a super lightweight resin which is then intertwined with a similarly lightweight (and truly space-aged) webbing. What makes it special? MAXUMFIBER allows our rod design team to utilize less material in the overall blank construction which helps decrease weight and improve sensitivity, all while retaining the crucial durability that every angler needs. MAXUMFIBER is our proprietary fiber material used in all of our graphite and composite rods. Whether your angling pursuits involve spinning, casting, or fly rods, we look forward to having you become a member of the Powell Rods family so that you can experience the best fishing rod performance value on the planet!
